The first light emitting diodes were seen in different types of industrial automation equipment primarily food processing, manufacturing, and oil rig indicator switches which would serve simple ON | OFF functions along with ERROR indicators that were set off by simple resistors on pcb boards. LEDs have become a standard replacement our traditional neon indicators. The technology from the first uses of LED to present day innovations is comparable to the era of analog phones to smart phones in once the technology was accepted the innovations and different applications and need for our environmentally friendly LED's took off at an exponential rate. The last phase before the big hit was when the LCD was phased out on some consumer electronics and was introduced into the signage market with the option of illumination being red, blue, green, and later amber. RGB ( Red, Blue, Green) controller boards and LED Drivers implemented by big names such as Cree, Nichnia, and Power Intergrations opened our world to the next era of lighting and illumination. Research, Innovative design engineering, and manufacturers experimenting with the materials used to make LED's advanced at warp speed resulting in the lumen efficacy comparable as the new standard for incandescent, commercial metal halide, sodium bulb, induction....well all types of high-power mercury containing residential and industrial illumination.
Compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) are simply curly versions of the fluorescent lights used to help save energy. Name Brand CFL's save 55% of lighting energy. Led save 90%. They use less electricity than traditional incandescents, typical CFLs can pay for themselves in less than nine months. An ENERGY STAR-qualified CFL uses about a quarter of the energy that an incandescent bulb does in its lifetime and lasts ten times longer. The lumen efficacy is the same in residential and commercial applications. CFL bulbs come in different colors including warm tones that were not as available when first introduced. Some are encased in a cover to diffuse the light and provide a familiar shape to the bulbs you are used to. They are not dimmable where as led lights are. They have a built in remote that is assembled together with heat sink and bulb. They are ready to go as soon as you screw them in. LED light Bulbs DO NOT Produce large amounts of heat. CFL's do which puts extra load of work on HVAC Systems during the summer. Higher energy cost result when using CFL Bulbs. The ultimate pro to switching to LED's instead or from CFL's is due to LED's being 100% mercury free and can be easily disposed of where as with CFL's require elevated licensing to handle the broken bulbs as HAZMAT due to their mercury content of approximately 60 mg per bulb.

Conventional Lighting Generates a large amount of heat. The average Temp of an incandescent light after just 30 minutes is between 250-305°. A LED Light after being on for 24 hours is around 80°. To reference that comparison: an incandescent light is comparible to boiling water; where as, a LED Light is comparable to a spring day.
